NYGC’s courses offer a structured and progressive learning experience. We value the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of our students and support your integration into a rich multicultural learning environment. In addition to our core General ESL curriculum, we offer specialized English in Practice and Test Prep courses that designed to address students’ specific needs in personal, academic, and professional contexts.

Course Descriptions

General ESL 

ESL 1  

(level I) 

This course introduces students to beginning English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture for everyday adult life situations and a wide range of needs. Students engage with short, adapted texts and write phrases and short sentences. The class will be taught using a student-centered, communicative approach to English language learning.

ESL 2 

(level II) 

This course builds upon elementary English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture for everyday adult life situations and a wide range of needs. Students understand short texts, write short paragraphs about various simple and routine topics introduced in class, and actively participate in descriptive discussions of immediate relevance. The class is taught using a student-centered, communicative approach to English language learning.

ESL 3  

(level III) 

This course expands intermediate English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture for everyday adult life situations and broader goals. Students interpret longer texts extensively, write connected texts about personal interests, and participate actively in discussions of opinions. The class is taught using a student-centered, communicative approach to English language learning.   

ESL 4  

(level IV) 

This course enhances upper intermediate English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture for everyday adult life situations and broader goals. Students analyze complex and abstract content, write detailed argumentative texts, and interact with the class fluently and spontaneously. The class is taught using a student-centered, communicative approach to English language learning. 

ESL 5  

(level V)  

This course develops advanced English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and culture for an extensive purpose. Students infer implied meanings, write well-structured texts, and interact with different audiences flexibly and effectively. The class is taught using a student-centered, communicative approach to English language learning.   

English in Practice   

Connecting in English  

(level II) 

This course introduces primary speaking and listening skills while integrating reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation for everyday socio-cultural interactions. Students engage in pair conversations, group discussions, and class-wide discussions on basic topics, and students gain confidence and familiarity in real-world English.   

Introduction to Writing  

(level II) 

This course introduces writing as a structured, process-based skill for everyday contexts. Students learn to brainstorm, draft, revise, and edit short paragraphs drawing on personal experiences and simple topics of immediate relevance, while reinforcing basic grammar and sentence structure. 

Accent Reduction  

(level III) 

This course introduces American English pronunciation in a systematic method, covering phonetics, stress, rhythm, and intonation, while reinforcing basic vowel and consonant sounds, word stress, and natural speech patterns. Students speak in a clearer and more natural flow.   

Socializing in English  

(level III) 

This course builds on intermediate speaking and listening skills by integrating pronunciation, reading, writing, and cultural awareness for real-world social interactions. Students engage in pair work, group activities, and whole-class discussions on extensive topics, and students develop confidence and fluency in English socializing.   

English Grammar in Use

(level III) 

This course introduces intermediate-level grammatical structures. Students apply grammar rules in context to achieve greater accuracy and fluency in both written and spoken communication.     

Public Speaking for International Students  

(level IV) 

This course introduces students to various types of rhetorical speeches and gives practice in planning, organizing, and delivering speeches. Students craft clear messages and refine delivery techniques to build confidence and effectiveness in speaking to diverse audiences.   

Advanced Socializing in English  

(level IV) 

This course enhances upper-intermediate speaking and listening skills by integrating pronunciation, reading, writing, and cultural insights for complex social interactions. Students engage in pair work, group activities, class discussions on nuanced topics, and refine conversational strategies.   

Advanced Writing Skills

(level V) 

This course develops advanced writing skills across a wide range of rhetorical essay forms. Students refine the elements of these compositions and extensively practice writing for different contexts.   

Business English

(level V) 

This course develops effective business communication techniques, strategies, and conventions in the United States. Students refine professional writing, presentations, and interpersonal skills for the modern workplace.   

American Culture  

(level V) 

This course introduces and examines core American culture within the context of American values, attitudes, and cultural patterns. Students are encouraged to compare these concepts with their own experiences to deepen their intercultural understanding and critical reflection on U.S. society.   

Accurate Pronunciation

(level V) 

This course refines nuanced aspects of American English pronunciation, covering rhythm patterns, reductions, and connected speech. Students achieve near-native clarity and prosodic fluency in personal, academic and professional contexts.   

Oral Presentation Skills  

(level V) 

This course helps students learn how to present on topics to deliver meaningful messages to the audience. Starting from drafting the content of the presentation to the final delivery, the teacher will guide the students to employ different delivery methods in creating speeches step by step.    

Compelling Conversations

(level V) 

This course develops advanced conversational strategies, nuanced vocabulary, and intercultural fluency. Students lead and sustain in-depth, cross-cultural dialogues on complex issues for professional and social settings.   

Test Prep 

TOEFL PRO

(level IV) 

This course familiarizes students with the content and structure of all sections of the TOEFL test. Key test-taking strategies are introduced. Students apply and strengthen these strategies through exercises made to simulate the TOEFL test.   

TOEFL STAR

(level V) 

This course further builds academic English proficiency and advanced test-taking skills needed for all sections of the TOEFL test. Students apply and strengthen these strategies through exercises made to simulate the TOEFL test.   

GRE  

(level V) 

This course prepares students to take the GRE exam. Students deepen academic English proficiency and extensively work on a wide variety of test-taking strategies.
